The deep loam soils mainly found here are composed of sandy silt resting on loess, in some parts very chalky. Red sands and gravels underlying the loess are exposed in some places.
It was already in 1936 that Ludwig Hiedler (2nd Generation) planted one of the very first 100% Grüner Veltliner vineyards. These grapes go back to a time when yield was not the prime concern of wine producers: middle-sized fruit, rather loose-berried, with a very 'down-to-earth' taste.
